The Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska is one of five hospitals of provincial rank and at the same time the largest diagnostic and treatment centre in the northern part of the Lublin province.

With its specialised medical care, it reaches over 300,000 inhabitants. Its health services are provided as part of hospitalisation, outpatient specialist care and inpatient emergency care in the Hospital Emergency Ward and the Night and Day Care Clinic. The modernised hospital helipad, suitable for night flights, enables 24-hour transport of patients.

The Hospital structure includes 18 specialised wards, Home Hospital, Hospital Emergency Ward with its Admission Room and Night and Day Care Clinic. The Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska has 696 beds, including 11 beds in the Hospital Emergency Ward. On average, approx. 30,000 patients are hospitalised every year (in 2019 it was 33,352 patients). Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the number of patients treated in 2020 was 27,546 (including 1,113 patients with COVID-19), and a number of consultations provided as part of specialist and emergency outpatient services – 126,273 (in 2019 it was 186,494). Year on year, a number of surgery operations and procedures conducted at the Hospital also increases steadily. In 2018 and 2019, a total of 8,034 and 8,796 surgery operations were performed, respectively.

The Hospital employs over 1500 people. Every day, highly qualified medical staff provide patients in the region with assistance at our specialised clinics and hospital units. Doctors, nurses and staff with other health professions hold numerous specialisations and scientific titles. They provide health services on a day-to-day basis, but also have adequate teaching skills to educate academic young people. The hospital also cooperates with the esteemed medical centres and specialists in Poland, e.g. in the field of cardiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, neonatology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and traumatology, radiotherapy, as well as has established cooperation with other entities, e.g. from France, Belarus, Japan, Iceland and Kazakhstan.

In order to provide people with adequate care and protection, all possible measures are undertaken to achieve the superior goal set by the Hospital, which is its patients’ well-being. The modern and digitalised Imaging Diagnostics Unit (with its X-ray Diagnostic, Magnetic Resonance, Computed Tomography, Ultrasound Laboratories), Laboratory Diagnostics Unit and Microbiological Laboratory (with Microbiological Diagnostic Laboratory and Microbiological Diagnostic Laboratory for Tuberculosis Mycobacteria) certified for the quality and accuracy of their analyses, Central Endoscopy Laboratory equipped with new generation medical equipment – all of them guarantee patients safe and high-quality diagnostics.

This hospital has undergone a major metamorphosis in recent years. The reconstruction of its wards, including modernisation and retrofitting of the Emergency Ward and the Operating Block, thermal modernisation and computerisation of the Hospital, launch of operation of two new buildings and one enlarged with a new floor have significantly improved hospitalisation conditions and comfort of work. Completed in 2014, the Centre for Infectious and Phtysiopulmonary Diseases provides professional premises adapted for operation of the Infectious Diseases Ward, Phtysiopulmonology and Pulmonary Oncology Ward, Outpatient Clinic for Allergology, Outpatient Clinic for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases and the Outpatient Clinic for Infectious Diseases. The Didactic and Administrative Centre, opened in the same year, houses, among others: the Rehabilitation Unit, Rehabilitation Clinic, the hospital administration and a public hotel. In 2021, a new oncology pavilion (“Bialska Onkologia”) was opened at the Hospital, providing comprehensive care for oncological patients in the region.

The Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska is extensively experienced in the implementation of projects co-financed from the following funds, among others: the Regional Operational Programme of the Lublin Province, the OP Knowledge Education Development, the OP Infrastructure and Environment, the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the EEA Financial Fund, the CBC Poland-Belarus-Ukraine, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, the State Budget, the Ministry of Health and the Justice Fund, COVID-19 Counteracting Fund.

In November 2015, in partnership with the Brest Regional Hospital in Brest, the project entitled: “The development of cardiological support for the Polish population and Belarus population under Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2007-2013” was completed. The project was valued at over PLN 4.1 million, as a result of which the Hospital in Biała Podlaska was provided with a second Haemodynamics Laboratory. The implementation of this joint project also resulted in the hospital being equipped with modern medical equipment and apparatus, including cardiac-peripheral examination apparatus with accessories and a system for ablation procedures not yet performed at the Hospital, which bring excellent results in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders.

Among numerous successes achieved by the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska, special attention should be paid to re-obtaining the Accreditation of the Minister of Health and implementing the Integrated Management System compliant with the ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, PN-N 18001:2004, ISO 27001:2005 requirements. In 2020 the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska was ranked 5th in the country and 1st in the Lublin province in the “Bezpieczny Szpital / Safe Hospital” ranking organised by the Healthcare Quality Monitoring Centre in cooperation with the “Rzeczpospolita” daily newspaper. In the category of third-level hospitals within the network, the Hospital took 2nd place. This is a great accolade and prestige as a number of categories are assessed, including management, medical care and quality of services.

In addition, the Hospital received the Gold Emblem of the Highest Quality under the QI ORDER category – the top-quality management. The Hospital is the Ambassador of the Lublin Province and the winner of the 14th edition of the Crystal Brick competition. It was also honoured with the “Złoty Żuraw / Golden Crane” Award, the Bizz Award for global business representatives. The hospital’s account of achievements also includes the prestigious title of “Gazele Biznesu / Business Gazelles 2014”, the International Certificate of Quality and the title of “Szpital Przyjazny Dziecku /Child-friendly hospital” for 2019-2024.
