In 2020, the partner hospital in Brest changed its name to the Brest Regional Clinical Hospital in Brest. The hospital operates as a therapeutic-preventive unit and organisational-methodological centre providing specialised, highly-qualified medical care to people living in the city of Brest and the Brest District. The area where the hospital operates has over 1.3 million inhabitants.
The hospital structure includes 54 units, including 28 treatment wards, 7 diagnostic clinics and the Brest Specialised Outpatient Clinic. Every year, approx. 30,000 patients are treated in the hospital and over 100,000 – in the clinic. The Peripheral Clinical Hospital in Brest performs 18,000 operations, including over 1,000 highly-advanced operations, more than 900 complex surgical procedures and approx. 29% of them by minimally invasive methods using endoscopic equipment.
At the clinic and hospital wards medical services are provided in a scope of 29 specialisations: transplantation, cardiac surgery, general surgery, vascular surgery, intravascular (endovascular) surgery, thoracic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, urology, combustiology, orthopaedic and traumatic surgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, cardiology, rheumatology, pulmonary medicine, allergology, occupational medicine, gastroenterology, haematology, nephrology, neurology, infectious diseases and oncology.
The hospital employs over 1,900 people. Its base includes in particular surgical beds – 56.6%, therapeutic – 26.3%, for patients with infectious diseases – 12.2%, neurological – 4.6%.
It has extensive diagnostic facilities: the imaging diagnostics ward with its computed tomography and magnetic resonance laboratories (more than 15,000 CT scans and 5,000 MRI scans are performed every year) as well as the ultrasound diagnostics and laboratory diagnostics laboratories. Moreover, the Hospital in Brest is a peripheral organisational and educational research centre focussed at expanding medical staff qualifications. Specialists from its surgical wards perform a full range of operations on thoracic and abdominal organs, brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerve injuries, hernia surgery, brain and spinal cord tumours, lens implantation, corneal transplants, hip and knee endoprosthesis, modern methods of chronic pain treatment using invasive technologies, including x-ray inspection.
The priorities in operation at the Brest Regional Clinical Hospital in Brest are as follows:
- the X-ray angiography and endovascular surgery ward – a full range of angiography and endovascular treatments: angioplasty and stenting of coronary, carotid, renal and peripheral arteries, procedures to place a filter in the inferior vena,
- the cardiac surgery and cardiac resuscitation ward – coronary artery bypass grafting on a live heart and cardiopulmonary bypassing, implantation of an artificial heart valve, implantation of pacemakers; over 1,000 heart operations are performed every year,
- the vascular surgery ward – operations on large peripheral vessels, including carotid arteries and arteries below aorta branches, lower limb vessels,
- the transplantation ward – 58 kidney transplants as well as liver transplants and anatomical liver resections were performed in 2019; in total 368 transplants performed in 2019,
- the surgery ward – laparoscopic operations on gallbladder, bile ducts, spleen, pancreas, endoscopic thyroidectomy in case of nodular thyroid pathology,
- the thoracic surgery ward – thoracoscopic lung resection, thoracoscopic treatment of diaphragmatic hernia, oesophageal diseases and injuries, laparoscopic hiatus hernioplasty, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery for local pathology of mediastinal organs and oesophageal diverticula,
- the urology ward – laparoscopic operations of renal cyst excision, laser ureterorenoscopic lithotripsy and cystolithotripsy, laser kidney resection, laparoscopic nephropexy,
- the orthopaedic and traumatic surgery ward – operations in the field of prosthetic joints: hip and knee replacement (up to 800 per year),
- the eye microsurgery ward – cataract surgery, strabotomy, treatment of retina detachment.
The Brest Regional Clinical Hospital in Brest is systematically modernised with state-of-the-art medical diagnostic, surgical and technological equipment purchased. In previous years, the angiography ward (2015), haematology ward (2016), infectious diseases ward (2016), radiology diagnostic ward with its CT scanner (2018) and MRI scanner (2019) replaced and the endoscopy unit (2019) were renovated and equipped with the latest medical equipment. As a result of the implementation of the project entitled the “The development of cardiological support for the Polish population and Belarus population under Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2007-2013” with the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska, a new Haemodynamics Laboratory was established in the hospital in Brest. The establishment of this laboratory has increased the potential of the Brest Regional Hospital in the field of diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, among others, by performing ablation and peripheral vessel angioplasty procedures, including cerebral arteries in the new laboratory.
In 2017, in the “Best Products (Services) of the Republic of Belarus” competition, the Hospital was granted with the “Best in the Region” Special Award in the category: “Provision of specialised assistance for adults and children” and is entitled to use the logo of “the Best Products (Services) of the Republic of Belarus” for two years. In addition, the Brest Regional Clinical Hospital is the first healthcare facility in Brest to receive the STB ISO 9001-2015 quality management certificate in July 2018. The Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics Unit in the Hospital, as a participant in the EQAS international independent quality control programme, was certified for the high quality and accuracy of the tests conducted at the Laboratory.
