The implementation of this cross-border project was also an opportunity to run free blood screening tests for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection – i.e. early diagnosis of hepatitis C – at the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska and the Brest Regional Clinical Hospital in Brest. People living in Biała Podlaska and neighbouring districts (District bialski, radzyński, włodawski, łukowski, parczewski as well as residents of the Brest Oblast aged 35-75 years could benefit from free-of-charge HCV testing run in the hospitals from October 2019 to July 2021. As part of the project, 3,000 such tests were performed at each Hospital.

Individuals with their blood screening for HCV showing an elevated level of anti-HCV antibodies could benefit from further free-of-charge diagnostics at both Hospitals, i.e. non-invasive examination of liver by elastography. Such tests could be performed thanks to the purchase of equipment for non-invasive examination of liver by elastography made by both hospitals under the project. As part of the project, 100 patients at the Regional Specialised Hospital in Biała Podlaska and the Peripheral Clinical Hospital in Brest each benefited from such tests. The availability of the equipment allows for the ongoing further diagnosis of patients in the field of liver-related diseases in both hospitals, also beyond the project.

People willing to take part in HCV tests in hospitals could also take advantage of the free HCV / AIDS test.

The promotion of screening tests among the inhabitants of the border area was accompanied by a wide promotional campaign of hospitals in Biała Podlaska and Brest, encouraging the inhabitants of the border area to take advantage of the offered tests, e.g. information posters inviting residents of the city of Biała Podlaska and neighboring poviats as well as residents of Brest District to participate in research, available in health centers in Poland, polyclinics in Brest Obalast or in partner hospitals made available to visitors and patients, advertisements in the local press in the Lubelskie Voivodship and Brest Oblast, disseminating among residents of the border area, early diagnosis of HCV in hospitals thanks to planned tests for invited people, hospital websites and a website of the project supporting hospitals in promoting early prevention of infectious diseases through tests, popularizing these tests among participants of medical staff training of primary care and polyclinics in the field of “HCV and HIV / AIDS ” in Poland and Belarus.

The implementation of prophylactic tests in the hospitals has undoubtedly contributed to raising public awareness of HCV infection and its risks as well as taking required preventive measures and periodic tests in this range.
